Hazardous Asbestos Waste – We Get it Cleared

Once hailed as a useful, fire-retardant and durable construction material, asbestos was widely used in buildings between the 1950s and 1980s. Asbestos ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, sprayed coatings, and roof tiles were ubiquitous back then, and the substance was even used in home appliances like toasters, ovens and hairdryers.

As we now know, this material was deadly, giving off fibres which could be inhaled, resulting in lung diseases and cancer.

Nowadays the quest is still on to rid our environment of asbestos. According to figures that emerged in a recent question-time debate in Parliament there are still an estimated 6-million tonnes of asbestos, spread across about 1.5 million buildings in the UK.

When all that hazardous asbestos is rooted out of a building, whether during demolition or renovation, it needs to be safely disposed of in compliance with the Hazardous Waste Regulations of 2005 and the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 – and that’s when Get It Cleared can help.

Asbestos Waste Disposal Process

There are two types of asbestos waste – friable, which is crumbly and can be turned into powder so fibres are easily released, and non-friable, which is more tightly bound. Our expert asbestos waste disposal teams can deal with both categories, ensuring the material is handled and transported in compliance with regulations for disposal at a licenced facility.

We pick up asbestos waste on a site after it has been identified by a licensed asbestos surveyor, and removed by specialist asbestos removal technicians.

Regulations state that the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) should be notified at least seven days before asbestos disposal is to take place. The asbestos must be double-bagged in thick, labelled polythene bags to prevent fibre release, with a visible warning on the bags about containing asbestos.

As a properly licensed waste carrier we are authorised to transport the packed asbestos waste in a locked van to a site that has a permit to accept hazardous waste.

Minimising the Risk of Asbestos Exposure

During the disposal process we make sure that our workers wear the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure their safety while handling the asbestos – coveralls, gloves, eye protection and respiratory masks.

We take our responsibility for disposing of this hazardous material very seriously, and like with any waste that is regulated we take great care to ensure we stick to the letter of the law.

Our asbestos disposal operations are always meticulously and professionally planned, timed so as to minimise the risk of exposure to asbestos for all concerned in the operation, and the environment in general.

Asbestos is highly toxic to humans so should you come across suspected asbestos material in any situation you should call in the professionals. Never attempt to remove and dispose of asbestos yourself, and never throw even a small amount of asbestos out with your general rubbish, or into an unsealed skip or container. The deadly microscopic asbestos fibres can float away and be airborne for days when disturbed, available to be inhaled into the lungs.
